  1. Welcome Class of 2017! http://www.ents-bbs.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=780&start=10 Biology Department Info Session Prof. Tom Jack

  2. To cover today Beginning your study of Biology First year course selection Overview of Major Bio Foreign Studies Program (FSP) Research Opportunities Q & A

  3. Beginning your study of Biology Several options! A very important choice for you! Let’s review the options: • Bio 11 (Science of Life) – topics based • Bio 8&9 (same as Chem 8/9) – F13 + W14 • Go directly into a Foundation Course • Bio 12 - Cell Structure and Function • Bio 13 - Gene Expression and Inheritance • Bio 15 – Genetic Variation and Evolution • Bio 16 – Ecology • Bio 2 (non majors)

  4. Should you take Bio 11? For most students, Bio 11 is the best starting point. Why? • Bio 11 counts for credit toward the major (if taken before the foundation classes) • Bio 11 (unlike foundation classes) does not have a lab, so is less demanding on your schedule- which means more time to focus on mastering lecture material • Bio 11 will prepare you for foundation classes. This is particularly true if your background in Biology is not strong, or it has been a long time since you’ve taken a Biology class • Bio 11 is topics based so even if you have a strong biology background, Bio 11 will not be a repeat of high school biology courses

  5. Biology placement/advising exam Available on Blackboard. Can take it whenever it is convenient for you. 1 hour – 30 MC questions Advisory – score can help with your decision, but in the end, the decision is YOURS! One of several criteria you should consider when deciding which Biology course to begin with

  6. Advice of the Biology Department Students MAY consider starting with a Foundation course if they satisfy two or more of the following criteria: 1) score of 22-30 on Biology Placement/Advisory Test 2) score of 5 on the AP Biology Test 3) score of 5 on the AP Chemistry Test 4) SAT (verbal plus math) > 1500 We recommend that students should strongly consider starting with Biology 11 (or Biology 8/9 or Biology 2) if they satisfy either of these categories: 1) students with SAT scores (verbal plus math) < 1400 2) students with a score of 1-4 on the AP Biology Test

  7. Questions about Biology placement? Faculty available after Open House. Walk in office hours – LSC first floor gallery Today (Thursday) – 5:15-6:15 Tomorrow (Friday) – 8-9 AM 10:30-11:30 AM

  8. Bio 11 Science of Life No lab Each offering of Bio 11 focuses on a major theme in biology, from different perspectives and levels of organization, from molecules to ecosystems. Students are exposed to many central concepts in biology. No pre-reqs. Dist: SCI 13F: 10A Biological Approaches to Global Challenges (McClung, McPeek) 14W:10 DNA to Diversity (Jack, Peart) 14S: 10 Emerging Infectious Diseases: How Microbes Rule the World (Grotz, Taylor)

  9. Bio 8&9 (cross-listed as Chem 8&9) a two-term laboratory course Chem. Principles and Biol. Processes Two-term sequence (13F, 14W) Covers the principles and processes of general chemistry as applied to the study of biochemistry and cell biology. Completion of both terms fulfills prerequisites necessary for entry into Chemistry 6. Sloboda What do I need to know about Bio 8&9? - If you doubt your level of preparation for Chem 5, then Bio 8&9 may be a good choice - Bio coverage in Bio 8/9 will be more chemically oriented than in Bio 11 - Bio 8/9 have labs, Bio 11 does not

  10. Foundation Courses all have labs Bickel Schaller Gladfelter Smith • Bio 12 Cell Structure & Function Griffin Dolph • Bio 13 Gene Expression & Inheritance Bio 15 Genetic Variation & Evolution Zhaxybayeva Irwin Ayres Bio 16 Ecology

  11. Bio 11, 8/9 and Foundation courses this year Fall Spring Winter Summer Foundation

  12. Biology Major PREREQUISITES Chem5-6 (or equiv.) Quantitative: onecourse from: COSC 1 or 5; MATH 4, 8 or above; EARS 17, ENGS 20 or BIO 29 See ORC for MATH 10 “equivalents” FOUNDATION COURSES Three from Bio 12, 13, 15, 16 AREA OF CONCENTRATION Sevenadditional courses (Bio 8&9, 11*-97) *If taken before foundation courses. Two > Bio 50

  13. Area of Concentration (AOC) In consultation with your Biology Advisor, construct your AOC by selecting sevenadditional courses that interest you You may count up to two advanced courses from other departments that are appropriate for your area of concentration

  14. There’s One Biology Major But AOCs are veryflexible These are justexamples! You may come up with something different… Behavior and Neurobiology Biochemistry Cell Biology Development Ecology Evolutionary Ecology Genetics Genomics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Human Biology Molecular Ecology Molecular Evolution Molecular Genetics Paleobiology Physiology and Organismal Biology Plant Molecular Biology Secondary Education

  15. FSP Tropical Bio Intensive full term research your Junior yr? W term Costa Rica tropical forests & freshwater ecosystems Little Cayman Island coral reef ecosystems Apply W term ONE YEAR IN ADVANCE! Pre-reqs Bio 16 and one more advanced Ecology course Take Bio 16 F or S This year if possible (but MOST important: make the right course choices to begin your Bio program!)

  16. What about Research Opportunities? http://www.dartmouth.edu/~biology/undergrad/research/dartmouth.html “Special” rules for ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09 • Formal Opportunities: • WISP (1st year women) • Presidential Scholars (juniors) • Bio FSP (often juniors) • In conjunction with German Studies, research at the Max Planck Institutes in Germany (juniors) • Independent Study (juniors, seniors) • Honors Research (seniors) • Less formal Opportunities: • Work-study • Paid research intern • Volunteer For the class of ’07: You are exempt from the Bio11 requirement as a prerequisite for foundation courses or for the new major, but you must take ten courses. For the classes of ’08 and ’09: If you have taken Bio 14 (Ecology), Bio 15 (Cell Biology), Bio 16 (Genetics), Bio 2 (Human Biology), Bio 4 (Genes and Society), or Bio 6 (Dinosaurs) by the end of Spring 06 you do not need to take Bio11 as a prerequisite for foundation courses or to graduate with the new major. If you have not taken any course in the Biology Department by the Spring 06, you need to begin with Bio11. To graduate a Biology major, you must take ten courses, thus if you do not take Bio 11, you must substitute a Foundation or Advanced Course. If you have any questions, please ask your Biology faculty advisor.

  17. How do I find out about faculty research? • Biology Department website: • http://dartmouth.edu/biology/ • Geisel School of Medicine Departments: • http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/research/ • Biochemistry • Genetics • Microbiology and Immunology • Pharmacology and Toxicology • Physiology If you see something interesting, contact the professor by email to meet and ask aboutresearch opportunities Most faculty LOVE to talk about their research!

  18. Independent Study / Honors for Biology Majors Bio 95 - Independent Study Bio 96 - Independent Study Bio 97 - Honors Research Bio 95-97 research in Med School labs is possible (but requires a Biology Faculty sponsor)

  19. FAQs What does AP credit in Biology mean? Unspecified Course Credit (Bio 000) (no credit toward Biology major or minor) What are my options for a Bio major course this Fall? Bio/Chem8/9 10A (Sloboda, Kull) Bio 1110 Bio. Approaches to Global Challenges (McClung, McPeek) A Foundation Class: Bio 12 Cell 9L(Gladfelter, Smith) or Bio 16 Ecology 10 (Irwin) Any non-major Bio classes this Fall? Yes! Bio 2 10Human Biology (Witters)

  20. FAQs Do I need to take the Foundation Courses in a specific order? No Bio 12, 13, 15, 16 may be taken in ANY order Do I need to take three Foundation Courses BEFORE starting the courses in my area of concentration (AOC)? No You just need to have the pre-reqs for each AOC class

  21. FAQs Who can serve as my Biology advisor and help me think about my area of concentration? Any Biology Faculty member (examples of faculty for different concentrations listed in handout) What’s the best way to stay up to date on Bio information ? http://dartmouth.edu/biology/
