  1. Geothermal Power The Power of Hell (kinda) Essential Question: Is geothermal energy a good alternative to fossil fuel? Why or why not?

  2. Why learn about it? • 1. There is a big geothermal unit sitting right next your face whilst you’re reading this very slide • 2. It’s one of the least tapped sources, which is surprising because it’s very clean and efficient • 3. Mr. Rosten thinks it’s cool.

  3. What are its origins? • There are three reasons why the bowels of the Earth are so dagnabbin’ hot: • 1. Nuclear substances are breaking apart and radiating deep in the Earth at different depths • 2. The Earth still has some heat from when it flew off from the Sun • 3. The Earth is so big, it expands and contracts due to its enormous amount of gravity. The friction from the movement gives off lots of heat

  4. What is the engineering behind it? • A geothermal unit has one central machine (Ours is in our old boiler room) that runs water through pipes to deep within the Earth. • The Earth heats this water up until it turns into very hot steam • This steam goes through fans. Those fans, moving from the steam, turn a generator, which makes electricity

  5. The History of Geothermal • Geothermal power has been utilized since life began on Earth. • The heat from the Earth is used by animals, plants, and bacteria when it comes near the surface as hot springs • Humans have used heat from the Earth for thousands of years to heat houses and water using pipes • Generators have been used to access geothermal energy only for the last 20-30 years.

  6. A Geothermal Environment • It is probably the cleanest source of power. • It emits almost no harmful gases, and does not destroy the surrounding area • It does take up a lot of space underground, which would destroy the land that it is directly underneath

  7. The Future • The future is very bright. Geothermal looks great compared to the competition, with no useless output of pollution, little environmental impact, and it’s fairly cheap. • But, if it becomes used on a large scale, there could be an environmental impact of sucking away large gobs of heat and dirt away from the Earth.
