  7. The Challenge included U of L’s “Vision for Excellence in 2008,” which included 11 goals to be met by 2008

  8. Achieve classification as a Carnegie Research I university COMPLETED

  10. Increased graduation and retention rates • Wall Street Journal survey named U of L one of the 30 top “feeder schools” to nation’s top graduate schools • Record number of student awards (Fulbright, Goldwater, Rotary, etc.) • Honors Program growth from 278 in 1999 to 818 in 2005

  11. Have at least 20 nationally recognized research and graduate/professional programs • 9 nationally recognized programs 2005 – several programs up for reconsideration

  12. Attain designation as a National Institutes of Health Cancer Center • Comprehensive Cancer Center application to be submitted in October 2006 • More than 15 new cancer drugs under development • Nationally sponsored research funding grew from $300,000 in 1999 to $36 million in 2005 • Cancer capital campaign topped its $41 million, five-year goal in only 18 months; campaign continues

  13. Have 75 endowed chairs and professorships in key fields COMPLETED • 54 endowed chairs and professorships in 1999 • 107 endowed chairs and professorships in Fall 2005

  14. Graduate at least 140 doctoral students per year COMPLETED • 78 doctoral graduates in 1999 • 144 in 2006

  15. Increase federal research funding to more than $40 million annually and increase total sponsored funding to $80 million per year COMPLETED • Federal research funding rose from $14.8 million in fiscal 1999 to $70.6 million in 2005 • Total funding rose from $21 million in fiscal 1998 to $98.9 million in 2005 • Fastest growth among research universities, according to NIH

  16. Increase endowment from $255 million to $500 million COMPLETED • Endowment is currently $689 million(March 31, 2006) • Endowment ranks 88th among 745 NACUBO universities; highest among Kentucky public universities

  17. Increase significantly the number of business start-ups that develop from university research activity COMPLETED • Business start-ups grew from 0 to 19 between 1998 and 2006 • Aptamera, other successes
