  1. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension W.I. Furman Content Short review of the written report Status of the project in current year Perspectives for year 2004 and up to 2006 PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  2. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension 1. Short review of the written report Main results obtained during last 40 months are reviewed in the written report provided for members of the PAC. • During this time essential progress was achieved in the project design ( a new improved technical project of multiplying target and its technological drawings, the part for approval of general engineering project of the IREN facility, a preliminary technical project of facility control system) PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  3. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • After forming of special LPP division aimed at creation of IREN linac LUE-200 some progress was got in a design, construction and testing the elements of accelerator being on responsibility of JINR. • Beside that practically all high-tech parts of the linac booked in Budker Institute (accelerating sections, buncher and SLED system) were manufactured, tested and delivered to JINR. • Most part of vacuum equipment of linac has been manufactured and delivered from Czech Republic and Bulgaria as its contribution to JINR. PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  4. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • During last two years most part of linac equipment planned to produce in JINR was really manufactured in the central workshop and in workshops of LPP and FLNP . • After final shutdown of previous neutron source IBR-30+LUE-40 the old linac was dismantled, the accelerator halls in bld. 43 FLNP were repaired and an assembling of new linac LUE-200 has been started up. • At the full scale RF stand was demonstrated two week non-stop operation of the LUE-200 RF system at 90% of planned level of power. PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  5. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • Crucial result in creation of IREN multiplying target (MT) was achieved by the end of 2000 when plutonium fuel elements were commissioned and installed for temporary storing at “Mayak” plant • After final shut-down of IBR-30+LUE-40 neutron source a dismantling of auxiliary reactor equipment has been realized • In course of preparation of full decommissioning of IBR-30 a license for this activity was obtained, all necessary equipment was produced and the storage for activated elements of the reactor , bld. 117/6 was constructed PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  6. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension 2. Status of the project in current year During months after the 19th PAC NP session main efforts were done on preparation for IBR-30 dismantling, installation of new linac and organization of transportation of IREN fuel elements from “MAYAK” plant and its storing at JINR. • It was delivered a shadow shielding for new storage bld. 117/6 • The set of documents necessary for licensing of the storage in Russian Agency for Radiation Safety is practically completed • But up to now it has not paid the dosimetric equipment necessary for commissioning of bld. 117/6. It can cause a derangement of full IBR-30dismantling by the end of current year PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  7. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • The progress in LUE-200 mounting could be estimated from comparison of pictures shown at November PAC session and the present ones PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  8. Construction of LUE-200Supporting columns PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  9. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  10. Construction of LUE-200Installation of first section grid PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  11. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  12. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • Very recently, on 11-12 March it was achieved practically planned parameters of the pulsed linac electron gun: • Repetition rate- 50Hz • Electron energy - 175 keV • Beam current - 5 А • Beam diameter at exit diaphragm - 10 mm • Electron pulse duration ~ 550-600 ns • Continuous operation time  - 32 hours PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  13. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  14. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension New fuel transportation • The negotiations with “MAYAK” plant on conditions of transportation of IREN fuel elements are carried out • A design of technical reconstruction of special room into JINR department for storing of fissile materials (DSFM) is completed • An approval of nuclear safety for storing into DSFM is obtained • But start-up of real works for equiping of the storage room and signing a contract with “Mayak” plant is blocked due absence of financing PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  15. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension extension • As very promising fact for future development of the project one could consider a successful implementation of agreement for reimbursement of JINR’s debt from the contract with NIKIET, Moscow signed (and implemented) for working out of technological drawings for multiplying target (MT) manufacture • Now JINRcould obtained these drawings necessary for choice of MT producers PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  16. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension 3.Perspectives for year 2004 and up to 2006 Main task of current year is to complete full dismantling of reactor IBR-30. It allows to start the licensing of the IREN facility construction Secondtaskis to deliver the IREN fuel to JINR from “Mayak” plant Third task is to complete an assembling of main equipment of LUE-200 in bld. 43 Fourth task is a choice of the multiplying target producer PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  17. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • But it is crucial for future of whole project an approval by JINR directorate of the corrected time-table with respective firm annual financing. The last point depends essentially from finding of new sources for support of the IREN project • As it could be seen from tables presented below even in case • of optimal financing a start-up of IREN source may be realized • not earlier than by the end of 2006 PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  18. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  21. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004

  22. Construction of the IREN source (the theme 06-4-0993-94/2004). Status&perspectives-proposal on the extension • Financial status of theproject • Total budget of the project approved in 1994 was 3.7 M$ • Up to now it has been invested ~2.1 M$ including ~ 0.8 M$ during 2000-2003 • More realistic estimation of the rest investments necessary to complete a first stage of the project could be obtained after a choice of multiplying target producer PAC Nuclear Physics, 1-2 April, 2004
