ICLEI Facts • 1989 – Jeb Brughmann (founder of ICLEI) was asked by UNEP to come to NY and discuss how his past success in the local community could be used to further the environmental movement at the local level • 1990 - ICLEI was created to promote Local Agenda 21 • 1991-1992 ICLEI collaborated on Chapter 28 or UN Agenda 21 Sustainable Development. • 1997 - Google “How ICLEI Was Created” an interview with Joan Veon • 2002 - Interview between Leslie Hom and Jeb Brughmann • 2002 – ICLEI applies for UN Consultative Status • 2003 – ICLEI changed its name from International Council for Local Environmental Intitiatives to be Local Governments for Sustainability for obvious reasons • 2012 - In June of 2012 ICLEI formed a partnership with Mikail Gorbachev

3. Did You Know? • ICLEI is often made aware of funding opportunities and seeks to direct funders to Members, and Members to funders, where there is a match. ICLEI does not provide funding but makes communities aware of funding. All funding for growth plans that comes from ANY government source is promoting Agenda 21 and your community is now bound to implement the plan under the guidelines the government mandates. There is a 68 page document outlining the requirements for taking Sustainable Grant money. • Your city/county does not have to be a dues paying member of ICLEI to have ICLEI working in your city/county • ICLEI is a registered, sanctioned NGO by the UN as is the American Planning Association, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy and about 2000 other foundations and organizations. • ICLEI is the UN implementation arm for Local Agenda 21. They also implement programs to measure and reduce GHG. This the Kyoto Protocol which the US is not a signatory.

The Earth Charter • Created by Maurice Strong (Chairman of 1992 Earth Summit) and Mikael Gorbechev • Mikael Gorbechev stated that he would like to see the Earth Charter replace the 10 Commandments. Worship the Earth as God. • Meeting at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in March, 2000, the Commission approved a final version of the Earth Charter. • The Earth Charter contains 16 Principles and 61 sub-principles • Principle 10a states – “Promote the equitable distribution of wealth within nations and among nations” • It also states “In order to build a sustainable global community the nations of the world must renew their commitment to the United Nations…. • The Earth Charter is kept at the UN building in New York. The container that houses the Earth Charter was hand made in the US and hand carried to the UN building. The container is very similar to the Arc of the Covenant

You Are Who You Associate With • APA and ICLEI supports UN Habitat • UN Habitat Land Policy makes it very clear that government should own and manage all land • APA and ICLEI are partners • APA associates with Planners Network a self professed progressive planning network that does not believe the private sector should own and manage land • APA was given a $5 million grant from the Clinton Administration to create a training program to be implemented in every university in the US. The training program designed was to train future planners on the concepts of Agenda 21. Smart Growth: A Legislative Guide • The APA has conducted a series of training workshops instructing planners on how to change their language to stop the recent onslaught of opposition. Private land ownership is also the principle instrument of accumulation and concentration of wealth, and therefore, contributes to social injustice; if unchecked, it may become a major obstacle in the planning and implementation of development schemes. Social justice, urban renewal and development, the provision of decent dwellings and healthy conditions for the people can only be achieved if land is used in the interests of society as a whole.

So Why Are We Involved with ICLEI? • The US does not support the Kyoto Protocol so why are we participating in a program that was declined by our country? • ICLEI partners with questionable organizations that do not have America’s best interest at the forefront. • There have been 138 ICLEI memberships cancelled in the past 18 months. • Alabama, the first state to pass a bill to stop Agenda 21 and all association with ICLEI • TN passed a resolution in the House and the Senate against Agenda 21 and ICLEI. A bill is expected to be passed in the 2013 session which starts in January 2013. • The RNC has passed a resolution against Agenda 21/ICLEI. This resolution will be added to the Republican platform in August, 2012 at the convention in Tampa, FL • Taxpayer money is being used to fund ICLEI. Did anyone ask your permission to spend your money to support an organization that is promoting UN policies?
