  1. MATHCOUNTS is the nationwide math coaching and competition program for middle school students What is MATHCOUNTS It promotes student interest in math by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport

  2. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. The vision of MATHCOUNTS is to be recognized as the nationwide program of choice among middle school co-curricular mathematics programs and to assist in the development of a mathematically literate population. I: Attain significantly greater usage of MATHCOUNTS materials in U.S. middle schools.II: Significantly increase participation in MATHCOUNTS competitions at all levels - local, state and national. III: Develop and implement formal MATHCOUNTS programs to increase participation by underrepresented populations.IV: Utilize Internet technology to enhance and expand MATHCOUNTS programs and services.V: Strengthen the national infrastructure and tools for supporting and conducting MATHCOUNTS programs.VI: Develop MATHCOUNTS board and staff competency to deal with expectations of higher performance and greater penetration of the market place.VII: Establish a process for responding to requests regarding the expansion of MATHCOUNTS internationally.   4. MATHCOUNTS competitions are designed to be completed in approximately three hours The Sprint Round (40 minutes) consists of 30 problems. This round tests accuracy, with time being such that only the most capable persons will complete all of the problems. Competition Components The Target Round (approx. 30 minutes) consists of eight problems presented in four pairs . This round features multi-step problems that engage mathletes in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving processes

  5. The Team Round (20 minutes) consists of ten problems, which team members work together to solve. Team member interaction is permitted and encouraged Competition Components The Countdown Round is a fast-paced, oral competition for top-scoring individuals (based on scores in the Sprint and Target Rounds). In this round, pairs of Mathletes compete against each other and the clock to solve problems

  6. Levels of Completion Chapter Competitions are written for a 7th- and 8th-grade audience, although 6th graders are allowed to compete National State School

  7. Levels of Completion:School In January, after several months of coaching, schools registered for the competition phase of the program should administer the school competition to all interested students

  8. Held between February 1 and February 23, the Chapter Competition consists of the Sprint, Target and Team Rounds The top teams and top individuals progress to the state competition. Levels of Completion:Chapter

  9. Held between March 1 and March 23, the State Competition consists of the Sprint, Target and Team Rounds. The Countdown Round (official or just for fun) and the optional Masters Round may or may not be included The top four individuals and the top team coach from each State Competition will receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the National Competition.
