  2. Education Requirements • Depends on many factors • Can vary from state to state • Basic standards exist

  3. Secondary Education • Preparation in high school • Should include: • Sciences, english, math, & social studies • Health Science Education • Prepares for jobs right after FvHS • Prepares for continued education in health care field

  4. Post-secondary education • Education received after high school • Includes: vocational, community colleges and universities

  5. Types of degrees • Associate’s degree • Vocational or community college • 2 year programs • Bachelor’s degree • College or university • 4 or more years

  6. Master’s degree • College or university • 1 or 2 years beyond bachelor’s • Doctorate or Doctor’s degree • College or university • 2+ years beyond Master’s degree

  7. Certification • Issued by professional association that regulates that career • Must fulfill requirements of education & meet standards

  8. Registration • Overseen by regulatory body in health care area • Administers the exams

  9. Licensure • Government agency authorizes individuals to work in that field • Varies from state to state • Requires a person to: • Complete education program • Pass state board/test • Continuing education, extra training hours in field of expertise

  10. Accredited programs • Make sure school is accredited in program of your choice!! • Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) • Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

  11. Continuing Education Units (CEU) • Required to renew licenses or maintain • Individual must obtain certain number of credits each year to maintain their license.

  12. Training • Professional • 4 or more years education • Technologist • 3-4 yrs education & work experience • Technician • 2 years education • Assistant or aide • On the job training

  13. Multi-skilled worker • Trained in more than 1 area

  14. Entrepreneur • Individual who organizes, manages & assumes the risks of a business

  15. National Health Care Skills Standards (NHCSS) • Health Core standards • Therapeutic/Diagnostic Core • Therapeutic Cluster • Diagnostic Cluster • Information Services • Environmental Services
