  3. Definition • Breastfeeding : • Is the feeding of an infant or young child with breast milk directly from female human breasts not from ababy bottle or other container

  4. Neonatalfeedingreflexes:- • 1) Rooting reflex: touching the check or circumaural area leads to turning the head to the side of the stimulus leading to opening the mouth seeking for the nipple.2) Suckling reflex: tactile stimuli of the nipple or aereolar tissue filling the mouth leading to milking action by tongue against hard palate.

Benefits Breastfeeding to Infant • COLOSTRUM • Yellowish milk secreted in the first few days after labor • Low fat for easy digestion • Contains mothers antibodies which boost infants’ immune system • Acts as a laxative to ease passage of meconium • Preterm Infants, Decreased infection rates And Increased IQ rates

Management of breast feeding:- • emotional support. • Patient should wear asupportive bra • Montgomery glands secrete oil to keep nipples supple : • Soap should not be used on breasts • Baby should be , warm ; not wet. • Both hands and nipple should be clean • Mother relaxed (sitting or lying on her side). • Support of the breast during feeding.

Management of breast feeding:- • Teach breast self examination (BSE) • Teach advantages of breast feeding • Teach signs of mastitis • Unilateral breast pain • Warmth and redness • Fever • good maternal health and nutrition. • avoidance of drugs that interfere with breast feeding i.e. ergometrine ; sedatives ; analgesics.

  20. Contraindication of breastfeeding • Carcinoma • Breast surgery • HIV infection • Patient take illegal drug • Maternal hepatitis B • Infant with inborn error of metabolism :phenylketonuria • Mother on certain medication :anticancer therapy
