Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex

This article discusses the upgrade of the Local Area Network (LAN) in the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex, focusing on improving reliability, efficiency, and carrying capacity. The LAN structure was changed to use Category 5 UTP cables, implement a logical structure, and adopt Fast Ethernet technology. Future plans include using Gigabit Ethernet technology and upgrading the operator workstations and NCS subsystems.

  2. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex Using of the Nuclotron: • fundamental relativistic nuclear physics researches • applied works using charged particle beams

  3. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex Location of the Nuclotron Control System (NCS)

  4. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The previous NCS structure is presented The NCS equipment can be subdivided into four local groups The basis of the NCS is local area Ethernet (Fast Ethernet) network – The Nuclotron LAN

  5. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The Nuclotron LAN was based on three repeaters Stations were connected to these repeaters by thin coaxial cable Thick coaxial cable segments connected the repeaters The LAN transfer rate was 10 Mbit/s

  6. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The Nuclotron LAN traffic can be subdivide into 4 parts • Data flows from a data acquisition subsystems to the file-server. • Information flows from the file-server to an accelerator operators workstations. • Transferred control data from an operators workstation to the NCS subsystems • External traffic (LHE/JINR Network, Internet)

  7. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The LAN traffic has a “pulsatory” natures mostly depending of the repetition rate of the accelerator working cycle (T = 6..10 s)

  8. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The NCS extension entails an increasing of a network station number and data flows. A disadvantages and limitations of the chosen topology and network standard become revealed. Decision was made to upgrade the LAN to purpose such aims: 1) Increasing of the network reliability 2) Augment of the LAN efficiency 3) Increasing of the network carrying capacity

  9. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex To achieve these aims it was decided to make next changes in the LAN structure: 1. To use Category 5 UTP-cables instead of a coaxial cables, substituting the segments topology for the “star” 2. To accomplish the logical structurization of the LAN 3. To turn to the Fast Ethernet technology

  10. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex 24-ports switches become a central nodes of the new LAN The new LAN have a structure with a distributed backbone

  11. Local Area Network of the Nuclotron Accelerator Complex The future plans of the LAN development: • to use Gigabit Ethernet technology for the LAN backbone and the file-server link • to upgrade the operator workstations and the NCS subsystems computer park
