  3. THE SPIRIT OF COUNSELING “Assisting a soldier to resolve his/her problems ... contributes to good unit morale. This, in turn, assists you in accomplishing your mission.”

  4. TECHNIQUES FOR KEEPINGSOLDIER PERFORMANCEON-TRACK • On-the-spot praise. • On-the-spot correction. • Counsel soldier. • Solve performance problems.

  5. COUNSELING STEPS Step Action 1 State the problem and standards. 2 Ask for a solution. 3 Develop an action plan.

  6. WHEN TO COUNSEL? 1. On-the-spot corrections did not work. 2. Soldier has an attitude change that lasts one or more days. 3. Soldier goes from being a good soldier to getting into trouble. 4. Soldier is consistently not performing to standards.

  7. WHEN TO COUNSEL?(CONT) 5. Any drastic change for the worse in soldier’s behavior. 6. Others tell you that soldier is having problems. 7. Soldier asks for your help.

  8. SOLDIER REACTIONS 1. Nervousness. 2. Cooperation. 3. Rational disagreement. 4. “Too Easy” agreement.
