Education is … Schools – tools used by society to help its children acquire knowledge, skills & values needed to improve society Curriculum – refers to what is taught in each course/ subject; includes how information is taught and in what sequence; held to state and national standards Teachers/ Educators – different roles include facilitator, disciplinarian, put in long hours, lesson planning/ implementing, continued & ongoing education, life-long learners

  4. Group Project Topics (Time Periods) Your group will choose 1 American Colonial Period (1600-1776) Am Early National Period (1776-1839) Am Late 19th Century (1841-1899) Am Early/ Mid 20th Century (1900-1979) Am 21st Century (1980’s – Present)

  5. Each Group member will choose 1 area to cover Describe the typical school and classroom of this period? Describe the kind of curriculum (information learned in school) during this era? What was the role of the Teacher during this period? What current events were happening during this period? What national leaders were prominent during this time?

  6. Your group of 4 people will research together, create a 5-slide PPT, and then present to the classDue Friday, April 13 Groups of 4 people total. Each group member create and present 1 slide of the PPT project. Title Slide with Time Period & Group Names Typical school and classroom Curriculum (information learned in school) Role of the typical Teacher Current events and Current leaders 5 Project Work Days

Barbee’s Research Rules Must give credit to every source you use Author name, Title, website address Must be in YOUR own words Must answer the topic completely Must be able to give enough info to write a paper about topic Gale Learning Library, Encyclopedia Britannica, etc.. • Each PPT slide should have atleast 1 picture on it • (relevant to the topic)

American Colonial Period 1600 - 1776 Teachers Sometimes well-educated but no guarantee Expected to be very Religious Unmarried (females only) Received room & board, food, and about $1.50 per week Indentured Servants (worked to pay for their ocean passage to the “New World”) 1645 First Free-To-All public school is established in Massachusetts Boys & Girls = separate schools Discipline included “dunce caps” and public rebuking Routines/ Procedures Bell starts class Take roll (attendance) twice a day Marked Tardies & Absences

American Early National Period 1776 - 1839 Very similar to colonial period “Blab Schools” very popular Students would recite their lessons out loud Yankee Doodle and other songs used to learn facts, geography, etc. Discipline Wooden switches, Sat in the corner, Sat under Teacher’s desk, etc. 1836 – 1st Reading Books published (William McGuffey) Orthography (Spelling) Spelling Contests (sometimes for the whole town) 1821 – 1st High School (secondary education) Boston’s English Classical School Supported by taxes Curriculum Greek, English, Latin Astronomy, History, Literature, Writing, and Logic

  10. The American Tutor’s Guide, 1808 Math Problem from the Early National Period Can YOU figure it out?  A man overtaking a maid driving a flock of geese, said to her, how do you do, sweetheart? Where are you going with these 100 geese? No Sir, said she, I have not 100; but if I had [twice] as many, half as many, and seven geese and a half, I should have 100: How many had she? The Answer is 37 … but how do you solve it to find 37?

  11. The Answer … 37 x 2 = 74 37 / 2 = 18.5 74 + 18.5 + 7 + ½ = 100

American Late 19th Century 1841 - 1899 Civil War ended Poverty prevalent (especially in South) Schools very different North vs South Teachers Strict rules for personal lives Usually 1 teacher for the entire town Civics very important subject/ aspect of Education Recited pledge to American and State flags daily, prayer time European immigrants .. free education for their children “Progressive Educators” Children should think, not just memorize & recite Problem solving, experimentation, analysis, creativity, imagination

American Mid 20th Century 1900 - 1979 WWI, Great Depression, WWII, Civil Rights Movement, Cold War, Vietnam War, etc … Classroom “Reader” books popular (from 1920’s – 1950’s) Dick & Jane, simple sentences, bright pictures Typewriter, Computer, Radio, Television – educational TV in 1960’s Sesame Street (1969), The Electric Company (1971), newscasts (History classes) Golden Age and the Baby Boom of the 1950’s (overcrowding) Irving ISD 100+ years of Education http://www.irvingisd.net/history/centennial.htm MacArthur High School 1963

  14. 1950s & 60s Education Industry The Civil Rights Movement Civil Rights & the “Melting Pot” Society Question of “Equality” ~ Separate but Equal (but never Equal) Segregated Schools deemed unconstitutional NAACP lawsuits … decision in 1954 by Supreme Court “The Little Rock Nine” 1957 1st black students attend Central High School in Little Rock Attended school armed with bodyguards Faced threats, segregationists, harassment, even the National Guard (sent by the Arkansas governor himself!) American 21st Century 1980 – The Present INTERNET – virtual classrooms Trends of the Times 1980’s Age of Materialism Designer clothing, big houses, fast cars, latest technology 2001 September 11th Attacks National attacks on America by Al Qaeda terrorist group Late 2000’s Recession Job loss, poverty level rises, spending habits change Going Green – save the planet “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Technology Boom & Global Awareness Classes online and all over the globe – virtual field trips Magnet Schools, Alterative Schools, Culturally Diverse curriculum Books replaced with Websites, digital media, life skills, career preparation classes
