  2. “And Summer Is Gone” • Setting: Summertime, 1980’s • Plot: The story of two friends whose friendship changes because one tries to fit in with the “popular” crowd. • Main Characters: David- artistic, nice, smart. Amy- changes her personality to fit in with the “cool” kids.

  3. “And Summer Is Gone” • Literary Element: Symbolism • David’s painting of the “Nine Lords of the Night” symbolize how he feels about his friendship with Amy. • Theme: People change. Sometimes the people you think are your friends, turn out to be the opposite. Stay true to yourself.

  4. “The Last Boast” • Setting: old west, 1800’s; town square • Plot: a man about to be hanged for murder says his last boast is that he once betrayed a woman. • Main character: Wolfer Joe- being hanged for murder, last boast- “I once betrayed a woman”, 29 years old. Annie- 17 years old, innocent, loves Wolfer Joe. Barney gallagher- deputy marshall, asks Wolfer Joe what his last boast is.

  5. “The Last Boast” • Literary Element: Flashback • Through the flashback, the audience learns how Wolfer betrayed a woman, Annie. • Theme: Sometimes you have to hurt the ones you love. • Personification: Doubt and Suspicion become characters in the story

  6. “The Chaser” • Setting: City apartment, present day • Plot: A man wants to by a love potion in order to get a woman to fall in love with him. • Main Characters: Alan Austen- desperately loves Diana and wants to buy a love potion. The old man- sells Alan the love potion and predicts that Alan will return for the “spot remover”.

  7. “The Chaser” • Literary Element: Foreshadow • The old man hints to Alan that he will eventually return for the “spot remover” • Theme: You can’t buy love. You can not change someone; they have to want to change.

  8. “The Sniper” • Setting: Dublin, Ireland. During a civil war. • Plot: Two men are on a mission to kill one another. • Main characters: The Republican Sniper and the Free-Stater Sniper • Literary Element: Suspense- keeps the readers interest; Irony- ironic that the two snipers end up to be brothers • Theme: Fighting doesn’t solve anything; survival of the fittest • The Republican Sniper kills the Free-stater Sniper; however they end up being brothers.

  9. The Most Dangerous Game • Setting: Ship Trap Island; Caribbean • Main Characters: Rainsford- excellent hunter; General Zaroff- madman who created a new way of hunting • Literary elements: Suspense, Conflict, and Irony • Theme: Survival of the fittest

  10. The Most Dangerous Game • Irony: It is ironic that Rainsford who is a hunter becomes the hunted • Conflict: Man vs. Man, man vs. Nature, Man vs. himself
