This process is also known as "converting", "converting back", or "converting over". It is a process that is often applied to move a file from one format to another. It is also a process used for audio and video files and data files such as text files.

  3. Encoding The encoding process turns an entire file into a digital format that a digital machine can easily understand. Video encoding is used to manipulate the format of a video, such as converting a video from a high definition format to a standard definition format or vice versa. Transcoding The transcoding process transforms a portion of a file into a different digital form. Transcoding allows video files to be consumed by a wider range of devices and platforms, which means that more viewers can view the video.

  4. Why is transcoding needed? Traditionally, video files were stored in analogue format, which can only be viewed with analogue devices.
