  1. EDA THE EUROPEAN BIOMATERIALS AND TISSUE ENGINEERING DOCTORAL AWARD Introduction and Appeal to Biomaterials Industry ESB-2010 11-15 September 2010 Tampere, Finland

  2. THE EUROPEAN BIOMATERIALS AND TISSUE ENGINEERING DOCTORAL AWARD (EDA )IS NOT INTENDED TO SUPERSEED OR REPLACE A PhD DEGREEEDA GIVES YOUR PhD DEGREE AN EXTRA EUROPEAN DIMENSION! It is a proof of quality and an added value for the CV of a young scientist.

  3. Ingredients for success • Biomaterial industrial R&D requires not only a sound scientific background and a good research experience but also • Flexibility • Open minded approach • Problem solving attitude • Enthusiasm • Everyday activities are carried out with a multidisciplinary approach and in an international environment

  4. Multidisciplinary approach • Scientific knowledge for industrial applications involves a wide range of areas: • Chemistry • Biology • Material science • Medicine • Engineering • Other fundamental aspects of routine work are related to: • Regulatory framework • Manufacturing process understanding • Market trends awareness • Project planning and management

  5. International environment • Biomaterial and tissue engineering business lives in a global scenario • Working for a company implies that cooperation on a European and Worldwide level is in practice an everyday activity.

  6. Why EDA is appealing from a Company perspective • EDA spirit reflects the type of attitude of suitable professionals for a future in industry • EDA is awarded to candidates that prove to: • have carried out their scientific activities in at least two countries this demonstrates enthusiasm, availability to move and flexibility to adapt to new working and life conditions

  7. Why EDA is appealing from a Company perspective • EDA is awarded to candidates that prove to: • have presented their PhD work at biomaterials conferences and published it in high quality international journals this shows good verbal and written scientific communication skills and the experience in discussing about science and technology at international level

  8. EDA appeal • You should think of EDA not only as an important academic recognition, but consider that it is also a sort of “quality label” • EDA is a way to distinguish active and talented researchers able to work and produce results in a scientific international environment • EDA award requirements fit perfectly with requirements for an industrial career in biomaterials and tissue engineering.

  9. REQUIREMENTS In order to be awarded his/her EDA by the ESB, the candidate will have to register with ESB and earn or justify their application by the following elements: 1. Courses 2. International research visits 3. Publications 4. Active participations at international meetings 5. Active participation in EC-projects 6. International awards and prizes

  10. 1. Courses The courses may be taken - at international laboratories - at Training Workshops 2. International research visits The visits, for a total of at least 1 months (preferrably 3 months or longer), must be to a different country from that of the student’s home university. The visit may be to a university, a company or a research centre. Training visits at companies are encouraged.

  11. 3. Publications At least 3 fully accepted international peer reviewed publications, obtained within two years after completing the PhD degree. Patent applications may be considered as equivalents. 4. Active participations at international meetings (5 credits) At least 3 active participations as presenting author (poster or oral presentation) at international conferences. 12. 5. Active participation in an EC-project Having presented own work at the various technical meetings 6. International awards and prizes e.g. best poster awards, best oral presentation awards at international meeting

  13. GUIDELINES • For more information please consult the ESB website • www.esbiomaterials.eu • where you can download : • the requirements • the guidelines • the registration form • the submission form.

  14. Meeting EDA requirements Many PhD students have proper characteristics to apply successfully or can complete their CVs according to EDA requirements with little effort. Give yourself an additional qualification in the Biomaterials world by applying for EDA !!!

  15. EDA offers significant advantages • For the PhD student: • EDA proves active involvement in international collaborations • This is a significant element when applying for a job in academia or industry • For the thesis-promotor (Principal Investigator): • Being able to show that the PhD students do work for some time in another country , proves the international networking and visibility of their research group. • Such elements are becoming very important elements in assessments of reserarch institutes
