What is cPanel?
  • Web-based Control Panel
  • Manage your domain by a web interface
  • It gives you the ability to manage:
    • E-mail, files, backup, FTP, scripts, etc.
  • Gives you access to site statistics

How to gain access to cPanel
  • Must have website access privileges
    • webmaster username/password
  • Enter your unit’s URL with a colon and the numbers 2082 in the browser address(e.g. http://a1300509.uscgaux.info:2082)
  • A sign-on screen will appear

  • Then click OK button and the cPanel Screen will appear

  • Web Mail
    • You’ll see icons for NeoMail, horde and SquirrelMail
    • These are different versions of “Web Based” email and are normally not used because of the Web Server room these systems take up.

  • This is where mail account are created and deleted
  • At the bottom of the menu is the link to add an account or back out of a menu

  • It’s recommended that email names parallel job titles, such as fc, vfc, cs, etc
  • Later on we will setup mail forwarding using these email names.

Mail Filtering
  • With email filtering, you can:
    • Filter incoming email which have specific words, addresses or
    • You can you automatic filtering such as SpamAssassin
    • See documentation for further info

email forwarding
Email Forwarding
  • Email forwarding is used to send “auxiliary job title” emails to a member’s personal email account
  • This prevents spammers from obtaining personal email addresses
  • When a new members takes an elected or staff position, the forwarding is easy to update and no website changes are necessary.

email mailing list
Email Mailing List
  • The email mailing list feature gives the user the ability to send an email, with one address, to a selected group within that unit.
  • The CS staff officer creates these mailing lists
  • An example could be: All-Staff, FL59 Ops Staff, etc.

Email Other Features
  • SpamAssassin
    • Sets up this feature if used. Used to control incoming spam.
  • BoxTrapper
    • Used to create a “white list” or “good-guy list”
    • If not on the “white list” forces emailer to reply to a verification email
  • Email Address Trace
    • Used to trace incoming emails by address headers
