Specialty CME Credits: Included as part of the 4 credits, this CME activity is eligible for 2 Pharmacology CME credits About this Issue: The differential diagnosis for adolescent gynecologic complaints can be broad, and these cases are often complicated by psychosocial factors, con?dentiality concerns, and the need to recognize abuse and sexual assault. This issue provides recommendations for the evaluation and management of obstetric and gynecologic emergencies. • Recommendations for management of adolescent patients with a sexually transmitted disease or pelvic in?ammatory disease, as well as those who have experienced trauma or are a survivor of sexual assault • General guidelines regarding con?dentiality issues associated with adolescent sexual health services Goals: Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to: • demonstrate medical decision-making based on the strongest clinical evidence; • cost-effectively diagnose and treat the most critical ED presentations • describe the most common medicolegal pitfalls for each topic covered. CME Objectives: Upon completion of this article, you should be able to: • Determine the differential diagnosis for pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding in adolescents • Recognize and manage pelvic in?ammatory disease and sexually transmitted infections in adolescent girls • Determine the appropriate management of abnormal uterine bleeding • Recognize complications of pregnancy that require immediate treatment or transfer to an adult facility • Discuss the pharmacology related to these conditions and provide appropriate medications for bleeding, infection, and pregnancy prophylaxis.
