  1. Addition Fact Strategies Through 20

  2. Commutative Property • Sum does not change when the order of the addends are switched. 7 + 4 = 11 addend addend sum 4 + 7 = 11 addend addend sum

  3. Doubles • Adding doubles always results in an even sum. 1+1=2 It’s true! 2+2=4 Oh, snore! 3+3=6 It kicks! 4+4=8 We’re great! 5+5=10 Let’s grin! 6+6=12 Now delve! 7+7=14 We’re mean! 8+8=16 Very clean! 9+9=18 It’s queen! 10+10=20 Now I’m empty!

  4. Let’s Practice Doubles! 4+4=____ 9+9=____ 2+2=____ 6+6=____ 1+1=____ 3+3=____ 7+7=____ 10+10=____ 8+8=____

  5. Doubles +1 • Use the double facts you know then just add 1 more. • 1+1=2, so 1+2=3 or think 1+(1+1)=3 • 2+2=4, so 2+3=5 or think 2+(2+1)=5 • 3+3=6, so 3+4=7 or 3+(3+1)=7 • 4+4=8, so 4+5=9 or 4+(4+1)=8 • 5+5=10, so 5+6=11 or 5+(5+1)=9

  6. More Doubles Plus 1 • 6+6=12, so 6+7=13 or 6+(6+1)=13 • 7+7=14, so 7+8=15 or 7+(7+1)=15 • 8+8=16, so 8+9=17 or 8+(8+1)=17 • 9+9=18, so 9+10=19 or 9+(9+1)=19 • 10+10=20, so 10+11=21 or 10+(10+1)=21

  7. Let’s Practice Doubles +1 3+4= 8+9= 6+7= 5+6= 8+7=

  8. Making 10 • Compose two addends to form a sum of 10. 10=1+9 or 10=9+1 10=2+8 or 10=8+2 10=3+7 or 10=7+3 10=4+6 or 10=6+4 10=5+5

  9. Plus 1 • Adding 1 is related to sequential counting (like on a number line). 2+1=3 1+5=6 8=1+7 10=9+1

  10. Plus 9 • Adding 9 is the same as adding 10 and subtracting 1. 9+5=__, think: 9+1=10 add 1 to make 10 10+5=15 add 5 from the number sentence 15-1=14subtract 1 to get the difference 9+5=14

  11. Practice Plus 9 9+3=____ (9+1)(10+3)-1=____ 6+9=____ 2+9=____ 9+4=____ 7+9=____ 9+5=____

  12. Fact Families Related number sentences using the same set of numbers 8+6=14 6+8=14 14=8+6 14=6+8

  13. Counting On Begin with one addend and count on the amount of the other addend. 8 + 3 =___ Think 8, then count on 3 more 8, 9, 10, 11
