It tells what all the other sentences in the paragraph are about. The topic sentence is often the first sentence in the paragraph. • The other sentences in the paragraph are detail sentences. Detail sentences add information about the topic sentence. They help the audience understand more about the main idea.

  9. Persuasive Paragraph • A persuasive paragraph starts with a topic sentence that gives the writer’s opinion. The Sentences of the body support the topic sentence, and the closing sentence restates the writer’s opinion.
