  1. How We Make Ceramic Wall Tiles India Ceramic wall tiles are among the oldest forms of decorative art. These are also some of the longest lasting tiles. Ceramic tiles made during the Roman era can still be found today. Many of these tiles outlast the very building they were found in! The word tile comes from the French word “tuile”, while the word “ceramic” comes from the Greek word “keramikos”. How How are are ceramic ceramic tiles tiles ma made? de? Ceramic Wall Tiles are made from clay, which is glazed and baked. Interestingly, the process has changed little in years. In fact some master craftsmen take pride in making their tiles in the age old tradition. Ceramic tiles also often carry beautiful works of art. Modern Modern me method thod Making Making body body slip: slip: In the modern method, the procedure is replaced by dust or dry pressing. Clay is till the primary material in ceramic tiles. However, some other elements could be added, such as sand, quartz and feldspar. These are mixed with water to create a somewhat wet pulp. This is shaped into the main body of the tile, known as the body slip. Dust Dust pressing: pressing: The body slip contains 30% water. This water binds the drier element/elements together. Once it is dried, the moisture content is reduced to 6%. At this point the slip becomes mostly dust. This is then placed in a press. Powered by hydraulics or electricity, a tremendous force is applied to the slip to shape it into a tile. This force, which can be as much as 100,000 pounds per square

  2. inch, gives the tile its impressive tensile strength. The slip can be given different shapes with the press. Glazing: Glazing: Once we have created the tile, it is time to give it a glaze. However, this is not a necessary step, even if it is almost always used when making ceramic wall tiles India. This is the glossy cover on the tiles which gives it a sleek and smooth surface. We can choose the glaze to be matte or glossy. Sometimes colour is added for a subtle pigmentation. Glazing techniques differ from silkscreen to spray. Baking: Baking: Unlike glazing, a tile has to be baked if it is to be called a ceramic tile. Under this, a tile is put in kiln to be baked under high temperature for some time. The only difference today is that the kiln has become far more efficient. The heat is adjusted and monitored through a computer to ensure that it remains at the right temperatures. The kiln used to fire tiles is known as continuous kiln where the tiles move in a conveyor like belt. The centre of the belt gets a blast of extremely high temperature, close to 1,371.1 degrees Celsius! The tile moves from this high temperature to the cooler temperatures at the side where it cools down before making the circle again. The high temperature makes the brick strong. The continuous belt like process has reduced the amount taken to bake a tile by hours. New methods known as monocottura use a blast of really high temperature, making the tile strong enough to make just one cycle in the kiln. The use of high heat has enabled us to manufacture tiles that are incredibly strong, enough to be used on floors. The bicottura method uses the same method more than once to give tiles a distinct colour. Tiles are moved through the kiln repeatedly to etch striking patterns on the tile. Advantages Advantages of of the the modern modern method method One of the biggest improvements in the modern method of tile making is the use of very high temperature in creating strength. There is no longer any need to bake tiles for hours. The time taken to manufacture tiles is now a matter of minutes. With bulk manufacturing taking a few hours, prices have dropped drastically. Ceramic wall tiles India has made a long journey. Once a European import, today it is an integral part of our homes. From special designer collective to the ubiquitous white tile seen in every home — they are inseparable part of our design consciousness.
