  2. Verbs A verb is a word that expresses action (run, carried, declared) or state of being (is, are, seemed).

  3. Classes of Verbs • Linking verbs • Auxiliary verbs • Action verbs • Objects with Transitive Verbs

  4. Forms of Verbs • For the Alabama High School Graduation Exam, you need to know the forms of verbs. • A verb has different forms depending on its number person tense, voice, and mood.

  5. Number of a Verb • Numberindicates whether a verb is singular or plural. In a clause, the verb and its subject must both be singular or both be plural. • Singular • One large island floats off Italy’s toe. • Plural • Five small islands float inside Michigan’s “thumb.”

  6. Person of a Verb Person indicates whether the subject of the verb is first, second, or third person (is speaking, is spoken to, or is spoken about). The form of the verb usually changes only when a present-tense verb is used with a third-person singular pronoun.

  7. Tense of a Verb Tense indicates time. Each verb has three principal parts: the present, past, and past participle. All six tenses are formed from these principal parts. The past and past participle of regular verbs are formed by adding ed to the present form. For irregular verbs, the past and past participle are usually different words; however, a few have the same form in all three principal parts.

Simple Tenses • Present tense expresses action that is happening at the present time, or action that happens continually, regularly. • In September, the leaves change colors and fallto the ground. • Past tense expresses action that was completed at a particular time in the past. • Karson forgot that just thirty days separated her from graduation. • Future tense expresses action that will take place in the future. • She will recall high school next year when she will be a freshman in college.

Perfect Tenses • Present perfect tense expresses action that began in the past, but continues in the present or is completed in the present. • Our boat has weathered worse storms than this one. • Past perfect tense expresses an action in the past that occurred before another past action. • They reported, incorrectly, that the hurricane had missed the island. • Future perfect tense expresses action that will begin in the future and be completed by a specific time in the future. • By this time tomorrow, the hurricane will have smashed into the coast.
