  1. Today’s Learning Challenge How can we achieve success and document results?

  2. The Logic Model

  3. Logic Model Example

  4. Outputs/Outcomes Drug Treatment Court • 140 individuals arrested on drug offenses referred to DTC • 100 DTC participants complete drug treatment • 60 DTC participants remain drug and crime free 12 months following discharge • 350 DTC sessions are conducted during the year • Drug related offenses decrease by 15% Violence Prevention • Two series of eight workshops provided to Latino families in Racine • 80% of participating parents indicated an increase in their knowledge of violence prevention skills • Participating youth experience a significantly lower rate of disciplinary involvement in school than non-participants in the school year following the program • 25 Latino families attend 3 or more violence prevention workshops • New violence prevention curriculum targeted at Latino children/families developed

  5. Boosting Accountability in 2010 • Measure the one or two things that are absolutely the most important to you. • Use numbers that don’t lie. • Use decent measurement tools. • Dump the “Baffle Them with BS” strategy. • Run a good program.

  6. Exercise #1 Convert the proposal developed at the last session to a Logic Model.

  7. Project Implementation Key Elements: • Include start-up time in your proposal • Designate an implementation team leader (not new staff) • Develop an implementation checklist based on logic model • Detailed tasks • Specific responsibilities • Timeline • Integrate new staff into implementation • Closely monitor start-up – especially participant recruitment • Quickly identify and resolve issues • Consider possible design modification if indicated

  8. Exercise #2: Implementation Tasks What are some of the specific tasks that would need to be completed in order to successfully implement the voter registration project?

  9. Reporting to Funders Key Elements: • Fully understand the reporting requirements • Respect the reporting schedule • Clearly answer the funder’s questions • Big NO’s: • Incomplete information • Adjustments to the reporting format to better suit your project • Obfuscation • Information in excess of what is requested • Generalities • Attitude • If implementation problems arise, advise funder early and seek advice • Be ready to respond to requests for immediate info

  10. Working with Funders • Give the funder small bits of info about the project’s success as it is ongoing. • Invite funders to events. If funder attends, make sure there is a liaison to escort them (best is board or client) and acknowledge them via announcement, printed material. • When a funder requests info for a special purpose, get it to them ASAP. Sometimes your funder has to report to a ‘higher power’ – having your info front and center can benefit you and funder. • If there is an objective that is crashing, let them know. Sometimes funders can help. At minimum, they want to know. • Determine the best ambassador to a funder. Sometimes it’s the ED, sometimes front line staff or board member with ED back-up. • Get on the phone and chat. Establish a personal relationship with funders.

  11. Wrapping Up • What has been most useful to you in this series of workshops? • Going forward, what tools are you most likely to use? • How can this workshop series be improved? • What areas would you like to have more information about? • Are there specific skills you would like to further develop? • What are your plans for grant-seeking in the next year?
