  2. CHARACTERISTICS: • A velar sound. The back of thetongueclosesagainstthesoftpalate. Theclosureisfurther forward ifitfollowsonfrom a frontvowel. Thesoftpalateislowered, and air passesoutthroughthe nasal cavity. /ŋ/ isvoiced.

  3. Theconsonant /ŋ/ isphonetically simple butphonologicallycomplex. OTHER CHARACTERISTICS • Phonetically, itis simple becauseitis no more difficultto produce than /n/ or /m/. • Phonologically, itisdifficultbecauseitisnoteasyto describe thecontext in which in occurs. • /ŋ/ doesnotoccur as aninitial position.
