Timeline • 1337 – 1453 • a century of English and French fighting on French soil • when the last Capetian king died, England’s Edward III claimed the right to the French throne( he was grandson of Philip IV) • victories were passed back and forth between countries • between 1421 -1453 the French rallied and drove the English from French soil, except the port city of Calais • marked the end of medieval society • brought about new types of warfare • knights following ideals of chivalry were replaced with foot soldiers and archers

The Battle of Crecy • August 26, 1346 • English army was outnumbered • Killed a third of French army • Then attacked with long knives • Heavy plate armor weighed down French soldiers • Couldn’t move once they were unhorsed • The longbow won the day, not chivalry • same victory was repeated at Poitiers and Agincort

Impact of the Hundred Years War • feelings of nationalism in England and France • Kings became national hero, rather than feudal lord • Power and prestige of French monarchy increased • English suffered from War of the Roses • Lancasters vs. Yorks • battle over English throne • considered the end of the Middle Ages

  5. Impact of the Hundred Years War • religious devotion crumbled • Great Schism and scandalous display of wealth • Discrediting of Church during Black Plague • code of chivalry crumbled • died at Battles of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincort • replaced by professional soldiers

Joan of Arc • 1420 – the English and French signed a treaty stating that Henry V would inherit the French crown upon the death of the French king Charles VI • 1429 – Joan of Arc, a French teenage peasant girl felt moved by God to free France from the English http://www.columbia.edu/cu/record/23/17/26c.gif

Joan of Arc • May 7, 1429 she led the French army into battle near Orleans • Hard fought battle, and the French retreated in despair • Joan suddenly turned and charged, with the French army storming after her • siege of Orleans was broken • led French to victory • Joan persuaded Charles to go with her to Reims, and was crowned July 17, 1429

  8. Joan of Arc • 1430 – the Burgundians (English allies) captured Joan and turned her over to the English • Then turned over to the Church • Charles VII did nothing to help her • was condemned as a witch and a heretic • burned at the stake on May 30, 1431
