Cattlebreeds in Sweden • Approx. 210,000 suckle cows • Approx. 330,000 dairy cows • Dairy cattle are decreasing in numbers, suckler cows are increasing • Hereford largest beef breed in numbers (85,000) • Other main breeds; Charolais(53,000), Simmental(44,000), Angus(30,000) and Limousin(13,000) , • Other breeds, fewer in numbers; Highland Cattle, Belted Galloway, Blonde D’ Aquitaine, Dexter. • Demand for Herefords growing each year. Angus is also gaining in popularity.

General laws in Sweden • All suckle, dairy cows, yearling heifers and steers, must be let out to graze from spring to autumn. • No use of antibiotics is allowed in prevention of disease. • No use of hormones to promote growth • Anaesthetic must be used for all operations like castration, dehorning etc. • Stunning used in all slaughter (no exception for religion etc.)

  4. Swedish Beef Control Program • The program is run jointly by the different beef associations • Charolais biggest breed (5,000 calves registered), Hereford second biggest (3,500 calves) • To be part of the Beef control program (necessary e.g. to produce calves with pedigrees) you are obliged to weigh all calves at birth, 200d and 365 days. • Average Hereford weights 2017 • 200 days : Heifers 259kg, Bulls 283kg • 365 days : Heifers 401kg, Bulls 502kg

The association • Number of members 320 • Number of Hereford herds in the official control program, approx. 90 • The association arrange each year import of semen of 1-2 bulls, identified and selected globally • Participate in two shows • Elmia (biannually), the major one, next one October 2018 • 30 Hereford • Mila (annuallay), a smaller one • 10 Hereford

Performancetestingof Swedish Beef Bulls • Approx. 30 Hereford bulls, and 180 beef breed bulls in total, tested annually • Starts in August at weaning, and ending with an auction of approved bulls in March. • The bulls are weighed every second week and the result is published at webpage • Regular inspection by the vet • Bulls must meet ALL requirements to be approved and sold at the auction • Higher than average daily gain (T-100 and upwards) • Minimum LinearConformation Score • Hoof health requirements • Approx. 17-20 HF bulls approved => sold at auction

Performancetestingcont, • The best bulls within each breed are selected and bought by Viking Genetics (VG, Nordic AI company, www.vikinggenetics.com). • The AI bulls are sold at the spring auction, when they are two years old. • VG typically buy one HF bull each year, depending on the demand for semen • 14.000 straws of Swedish HF semen sold 2017. • 1,000 Pure breed • 13,000 dairy cows • Average auction price for Hereford, has after several years of incline, stabilized around the level of 2018; 5,200 Euro • Highets overall price at the auction 2018 – 11.300 Euro – paid for a Hereford bull !!
