  2. Act 3 • Freytag’s pyramid: Act 3 is the Climax of the play – something is about to change. • The play has been going well for the lovers, now it’s about to turn sour.

Act 3, Scene 1 Put the main events from this scene in the correct order • Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel. • Benvolio takes Mercutio away to die and Romeo says his love for Juliet has made him soft. • Mercutio is annoyed that Romeo won’t fight and steps in to take his place. • Romeo says he loves Tybalt and refuses to fight. • The Prince, the Capulets and the Montagues arrive on the scene to find two dead bodies. • Lord Montague says Romeo avenged Mercutio’s death by killing Tybalt and should be set free. • Benvolio tells Romeo that Mercutio is dead. • Romeo tries to stop Tybalt and Mercutio. He reminds them of the Prince’s punishment, should the Capulets or the Montagues break the peace. • Romeo comes between Tybalt and Mercutio. Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arms. • The Prince declares that Romeo must be banished. • Romeo attacks Tybalt and they fight. • Tybalt dies and Benvolio tells Romeo to escape. • Mercutio curses the Montagues and the Capulets.
