Engaging with John Snow: Evidence in Epidemiology and Upcoming Assignments

In today’s class on 2/5/13, we will focus on John Snow's contributions to epidemiology and evidence-based practices. Remember to submit your rough drafts of the letter by tomorrow, as they will be graded like a quiz. Our final copies are due this Thursday. Additionally, we will discuss background information relevant to Snow’s work and read the letter from Whiting, which will set the stage for our upcoming quiz. Let’s explore how John Snow revolutionized our understanding of disease transmission and evidence collection.

  7. C33 John Snow and the Search for Evidence Quiz Grade – Write a letter to the London Board of Health. You are essentially writing a persuasive essay. State the cause of Cholera. Present the data found by Snow and Whiting. State why they should believe you(What does the data mean). What should be done to stop the spread?
  8. Part 1:The Cause of Cholera State how you think people are getting Cholera. Where is it coming from?
  9. Part 2: Present Data to Support Your Idea about the cause of Cholera You need evidence to support your idea Not great -In the letter Better -Bulleted Best -Present the data in a table that is easy to read
  10. Part 3: Why should they believe you? Interpret what the data means – Explain the data Examples: Not good - You should believe me because I worked hard. Needs improvement - S&V killed more people than Lambeth. Without explaining the data someone could argue that S&V had more deaths because they served more people. Best - Analyze the data – Show what the data means.
  11. Part 4: What should be done? What should we do to stop the spread of the disease? Not good -Don’t drink any water – Not realistic!!! Better -Realistic solution to stop current outbreak. Best -Realistic solutions to stop the current outbreak, AND how to prevent future outbreaks.
