  • Aromatherapy was developed from the ancient practice of using different plant essences to promote a person’s health and wellbeing. Art and writings from ancient civilisations of Egypt, Persia and China show the use of plant and oils in their medicine and religion. It wasn’t until the 13th century that the use of aromatic oils in England was first documented.

  • Aromatherapy is the practice of using plant oils and essential oils for physical and psychological wellbeing. Aromatherapy also encourages the use of other complementary ingredients such as vegetable oils, jojoba, hydrosols and milk powders.
  • People who practice aromatherapy tend not to use synthetic oils such as ‘perfume oils’. This is because they contain synthetic chemicals and do not have the same health benefits.

  • Some aromatherapy benefits include:
    • Relaxation and stress relief
    • Mood enhancement
    • Boosting the immune, respiratory and circulatory systems.
  • Aromatherapy doesn’t cure major illnesses but it can help to relieve the discomfort associated with them.
  • Aromatherapy massages can be effective as the oils used are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream, this can help aching muscles and bruises.

When fragrances are smelled, they stimulate the release of certain chemicals and endorphins in the brain.

  • Concentrated essential oils are very powerful and should be handled with care. They should be used diluted. Concentrated oils can lead to burnt skin if directly applied.
  • Some oils should not be used if you have certain medical conditions.
  • Several oils should not be used while pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • The wrong use of oils can lead to sickness.
