Enhancing Asthma Understanding in Children: Online Education for Health Professionals

This project aims to improve knowledge and awareness of asthma in children and young people by offering a free, online educational course. Participants will learn about asthma's impact on quality of life, triggers, medication use, recognizing symptoms, and providing support during an asthma attack. The resource is supported by The George Coller Memorial Fund and Open Airways, reaching audiences internationally. This initiative is valuable for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their understanding of pediatric asthma. Context • Asthma is a common medical condition and frequent cause of morbidity in children and young people (C&YP) in the UK and internationally. • School absence, activity avoidance and feeling different are issues repeatedly highlighted by C&YP with asthma¹. • C&YP spend much of their time away from their parents/carers, with adults who may be lay people with little understanding of asthma³. • Asthma deaths in the UK are amongst the highest in the world² and often occur outside of hospital⁴.

Learning outcomes • Understand how asthma affects a child’s quality of life • Recognise triggers that may affect a child’s asthma • Understand how medicines work and how inhalers are used • Recognise when a child may be developing an asthma attack • Know how to help a child having an asthma attack
