  1. Warm- Up 8-28-2012 What is Culture? What Components define culture? What traits define the Culture of the United States?

Culture- the way of life that characterizes a group of people; the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics common to members of a particular group or society.Components include dress, food, values and beliefs, religion, language, architecture, music, dance, sports, gender roles, law, education, government, economy, and traditions.

  3. Culture region- a portion of the Earth’s surface that shares common cultural elements; a cultural system prevails.

  4. Culture group- a group of people whose ethnicity, religion, education, or social group share a body of customs, beliefs, social forms, and materials traits.

  5. What makes America America?? • What does a Texan look like to the rest of the world? • How would you recognize a Texan? • What does an American look like? • How would you recognize One? • What makes America America? • Why are we unique? • What words describe our Culture

  6. Cultural Vocabulary • Culture trait- a single element of normal practice in a culture is a culture trait. Examples: fork= chopstick, ball cap= turban • Diversity- being composed of differing elements • Multicultural- places or regions that include many different cultures. U.S.A. • Demographics- statistical study of human populations (size, distribution) • National Identity- regardless of ethnicity, people share common core values, right, and civic responsibilities that define them as a country/nation.
