  4. Situation • Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam • Campus university, strong growth (2000: 13 000 – 2006: 19 000 students) • 12 faculties of different sizes (2 M€ - 45 M€) • Differentiated support services • Relative autonomy of faculties

  5. Problems in administration • Differentiated services • Ineffective decision making and consultation structures • Not making best use of human potential • Symbol problem issues (website, real estate)

  6. Study visit purpose • Learn from Helsinki experience • Develop agenda for VU administration strategy • Have fun

  7. Helsinki experience • Very well prepared • Senior level reception and involvement both sides • Fun activities • Quality content; challenging but also comparable (i.e. within reach)

  8. Post Helsinki • Clearer problem analysis • Commitment of all • Change of culture

  9. Post Helsinki • Incremental progress in meetings • Collective thematic lunches • Identification of issues to address • Redesign of administration and support: • including sponsor group of 4 WS alumni plus 2

  10. Key choices • Take all faculty directors and director of communication as bridge to service directors • Instrument of study trip (safe environment) • Involve executive board member (commitment and budget) • Involve WSAN alumni and in particular Esa Hamalainen
