Key Terms • ZINK • Thermal Printing • Dye Crystals • Thermal Head • Platen • Thermochromism
ZINK Imaging • Spinoff of the Polaroid Corporation. • New form of Thermal Printing. • Breakthrough printing technology. • Prints inkless color images. • ZINK-(Zero-Ink)
What Is Thermal Printing? • A Thermal Printer (or direct thermal printer) produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermochromic paper, or thermal paper.
What’s Inside • A thermal head generates heat and prints on paper. • A platen—a rubber roller, that feeds paper. • A spring that applies pressure to the thermal head causing it to contact the paper. • And controller boards for controlling the mechanism.
Thermochromic Paper • Made of transparent Dye crystals, makes paper like like standard printer paper. • When heated crystals change to gas then back to a solid state(thermochromism), producing color.
