  3. FAO Sub-regional Office for Central Asia (SEC) FAO-SEC was established in 2007and covers: Azerbaijan Kazakhstan Kyrgyzstan Tajikistan Turkey Turkmenistan Uzbekistan Country Office in Tajikistan headed by Mr Viorel Gutu (FAO Representative).

  4. Wildlife Activities at Global Level • FAO mostly conducts ‘normative work’: • legislative/policy support; • capacity development; and • technical guidance. • The aim is to conserve wildlife together with their habitats and to improve the livelihoods of rural communities. Typical topics of wildlife-related work by FAO include: • ecotourism; • human-wildlife conflict; • wildlife policies and legislation; • illegal harvesting and trade for food and non-food purposes; • impacts of climate change on wildlife and protected areas. • FAO is member of the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW). • Contact: wild-life@fao.org

Biodiversity Projects in Central Asia 1/3 As an implementing agency for projects of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), FAO provides guidance on strategies and policies and their practical implementation in a participatory approach: Sustainable Land Management and Climate Friendly Agriculture, Turkey 2015 – 2019, USD 5.7 million Focal areas: Biodiversity, Climate Change Mitigation, Land Degradation Focus on great bustard (Otis tarda) as key/indicator species in agriculture

  7. Biodiversity Projects in Central Asia 2/3 Conservation and Sustainable Management of Turkey’s Steppe Ecosystems 2016 – 2020, USD 2.5 million Focal area: Biodiversity Focus on goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) as key/indicator species

Biodiversity Projects in Central Asia 3/3 Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) 2016 – 2019, USD 3.6 million Funded by International Climate Initiative (IKI) Partnership with Greifswald University, Michael Succow Foundation, and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity in Kazakhstan (ACBK) Conservation and sustainable use of cold winter deserts in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan
