Fury Unleashed: A Storm's Wrath in 1286

Fear and despair swept over the men like waves, as the thick clouds blocked the feeble sun like a dark shroud. The ruins were skeletons of the buildings they had been before, and the sea roared like an enraged animal, clawing at the shore with a relentless fury, leaving nothing but sorrow in its wake.

  1. The Great Storm of 1286

  2. LO: to use imagery to describe a storm. GOOD GOOD: I can use simile, metaphor and personification to describe a storm at sea. BETTER BETTER: I can extend my similes, metaphors and personification to add interest and to make them more powerful. BEST BEST: I can write a passage that combines simile, metaphor and personification to create an engaging, powerful description of the Great Storm of 1286.

  3. Simile: Simile: creates imagery by comparing one thing to another (using ‘like’ or ‘as ___ as ___’) Use simile to describe the storm in the picture. You could comment on: - The clouds - The wind - The waves / the surf - The wretches in the water - The townsfolk cowering in their homes - The brave life-boat men rescuing the sailors - The feeling - Anything else. Fear and despair swept over the men like waves. The thick clouds blocked the feeble sun like a dark, black shroud.

  4. Metaphor: Metaphor: creates imagery by saying something is something else (eg: The cave was a mouth that swallowed all who fell in). Use metaphor to describe the things you see in Turner’s famous painting of Dunwich. You could comment on: - The church on the cliff - The ruins - The sandy cliffs - The raging waters, the waves, the sea - The men trying to launch their boat - The harbour - The feelings The ruins were skeletons of the buildings they had been before. The men were the puny playthings of the mighty sea. The waves were roaring animals biting at the shore.

  5. Personification: Personification: creates imagery by giving things human characteristics. Use personification to describe the things you see in Vernet’s picture of a shipwreck. The buildings on the shore seemed to cower and shake in fear as the waves clawed at their foundations

  6. Combine all three to create incredible imagery. Like an enraged animal, the sea roared, writhed and snatched at the desperate people on the shore. It clawed at the ground underneath their homes until they started to shake and fall apart. Then it reached with long arms into their houses through the doors and windows, clasped the poor wretches in its watery hands and dragged them away to the deep. It left nothing behind but sorrow. Use longer sentences for description, and shorter ones to add drama and to change the pace.
