Milestones Definition: Milestones and Key Project Deliverables are significant, highly visible events of special importance to the project.
Milestones Events: • Milestones; • Key Project Deliverables; or • Go / No Go Decision Points.
Milestones Milestones: Significant Point in the project schedule • Schedule Based; • Usually of Zero (0) Duration; • Probably on the Critical Path; • (e.g., “Requirements Approved”, “Testing Complete”)
Milestones Key Project Deliverable: Significant Event in the project schedule • Key Task or Activity; • Mandatory Event / Task; • Important Dates for Project Success; • Derived from WBS; • Not all Tasks / Activities; and • Samples Attached.
Milestones Go / No Go Decision Points • Workflow Gate Approval (SCIO); • SDLC Phase Exit Approval; or • Management Defined Checkpoint Review.
Milestones Purpose: Milestones provide an on-going control mechanism for measuring and assessing project progress: • Scope (Deliverables) • Schedule
Milestones Control Mechanism: Measurement of where you are compared to where you should be so that corrective action can be taken in the event of a deviation.
Milestones Uses: • Management High-Level Reporting; • Measurement of Progress; • Identification of Scope or Schedule Concerns / Constraints; and • Comparison to “Accomplishments”
Milestones Summary: • “Schedule” Tab of PPM Tool • “Project”; • “Phases”; and • “Milestones”. (Note: Presence or Absence Only Until Tool Upgrade)
