Why Teacher Scholarships? Contribute to the overall development of education in Ras Al Khaimah Improve the status of teachers and increase interest in the profession Provide distinguished teachers with opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge Enable schools to recruit and retain high quality teachers Foster interest in action-based research and impact assessment
Academic Scholarships • Scholarships cover up to 50% of tuition associated with masters degrees or short courses (1-3 months duration) • Qualifications must be related to education, such as: • Master's in Education • CELTA certification • English language courses • TOEFL preparation courses • International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Qualifications that expand an applicant’s knowledge of their subject area may also be considered on a case-by-case basis. • Qualifications must be in the United Arab Emirates (scholarships do not cover expenses for overseas programs) • Limited number of scholarships available each year
Action Research Scholarships Scholarships provide up to Dhs 10,000 to undertake small-scale action research projects in individual classrooms or schools Projects should address an identified need related to improving teaching or enhancing student learning Research may be carried out by an individual or small group of teachers
Minimum Eligibility Bachelor’s degree Current teacher or school administrator in a Ras Al Khaimah school or Education Zone (preference given to teachers in government schools) Minimum of three years teaching experience Successful completion of at least two Al Qasimi Foundation teacher professional development courses(21st Century Research required for Action Research applicants) Commitment to continue working in Ras Al Khaimah’s education sector Desire to share new skills and knowledge with other education professionals Clear idea for how the Scholarship will benefit students, colleagues, and overall education sector in Ras Al Khaimah
Online Application Process English or Arabic application and supporting materials? Academic Scholarship application requires: Personal statement Curriculum vitae (CV) Copies of tertiary education certificates, transcripts Letter of acceptance for chosen qualification Documentation of total program costs Two letters of recommendation Action Research application requires: Cover letter Preliminary research proposal Detailed budget with itemized expenses Curriculum vitae (CV) for lead researcher, team members Documentation of research approval Documentation that lead researcher and/or team members have completed 21st Century Research Two letters of recommendation
How are recipients chosen? Academic Scholarships: • Personal statements • Previous academic performance • Quality of chosen qualification • Interviews with top applicants • Preference given to Emirati teachers Action Research: • Relevance of the proposed research • Quality of the overall proposal • Knowledge of background research and literature review • Performance in 21st Century Research course
Scholarship Conditions General Conditions: • Continue working full-time while receiving scholarship • Conduct a workshop for other educators to share researchor new skills/ideas attained through chosen qualification • Sign agreement to continue working in Ras Al Khaimah: • Academic short course recipients: minimum 1 year • Masters degree & CELTA recipients: minimum 2 years • Action Research recipients: minimum 1year Special Conditions: • Masters degree recipients must maintain a B-average and write a short summary of their final project (as applicable) to be published on the RAK Teachers’ Network • Action Research recipients must write a short report summarizing their research findings for the Foundation to be published on the RAK Teachers’ Network
How many scholarships are awarded? • Foundation directors and program managers serve as the review committee • Scholarship selection and review process is competitive • Number of scholarships varies annually based on costs of academic programs and proposed research, but generally: • Masters degrees (2) • Short courses (2) • CELTA (2) • Action research (2)
