A little about me… • I received my BS from Longwood University and MIS Math Specialist Degree from VCU • This is my 9th year teaching middle school math • I was born in Pittsburgh – GO STEELERS! • I have two precious “puppies”
Goals • For your child to feel & be successful in math! • Help students become independent, critical mathematical thinkers • Explore math applications found in everyday life • To avoid feelings such as this
Math 1 Units • Introduction to Functions & Equations • Linear Functions • Systems of Equations and Inequalities • Exponential Functions • Quadratic Functions • One Variable Statistics We also cover topics from the Math 8 curriculum that were not touched on in 7 Plus last year.
Important Math 1 Information • Students in this course will have to take the Math 8 EOG and the Math 1 EOC. • The final Math 1 EOC grade will count 20% of student’s final grade • Required high school level course and students are getting credit for this course on their transcript
Math 8 Units • Number Sense: Squares and Square Roots, Cubes and Cube Roots • The Real Number System • Properties of Exponents • Scientific Notation • Solving Equations • Geometric Properties • Pythagorean Theorem • Volume of Cylinders, Cones, & Spheres • Identifying Functions • Linear Functions-Slope • Linear Functions-Equations of Lines • Investigating Bivariate Data-Scatter Plots & Two-Way Tables • Solving Systems of Equations • Transformations & Properties of Transformations
Point Recovery Opportunities • Students are allowed to participate in MPMS Point Recovery Opportunity when they score below a 70% on tests/projects (25-50 points) • Students must complete the specific remediation assignment and turn it in with test corrections • Available once per assessment • Scoring: • Earn ½ credit on each corrected question • Earn up to a 70% on assessment score
Late Work Policy • All late work will have a half point deduction for each day assignment is late until point value reaches zero
Organization and Calculators • Importance of keeping the math notebook up to date • Graphing calculators are a must for 8th grade math and beyond. Students can rent one from school if one cannot be purchased.
