  1. Access Control Systems Explained

  2. If you’re seeking to increase security at your business premises, you might be thinking about having an access control system installed. These systems are self-explanatory - in that they do what they say in the description - and allow you to have complete control over who gains access to your commercial premises. In the past, the term ‘access control’ was applied to any form of security that prevents or enables certain individuals to enter a property and could even have been used to describe a lock and key set. Nowadays, however, access control systems have become far more sophisticated and the term is usually used to refer to a computer-based, electronic card access control system.

  3. Allowing you to control entry to exterior and interior doors, access control installation gives quick and convenient access to those who are permitted to enter, while restricting access to those who are not. What are the basic components of an access control system? These systems can differ greatly, but all contain at least the following few basic components:

  4. • Access cards Best thought of perhaps, as an electronic key, these cards can be used by individuals to gain permitted access through certain doors that have been secured using the control system. Each with a unique code, the cards are similar to a credit card in appearances. • Card readers These are the devices that electronically read the access card, with some requiring the card to be inserted, while others require a proximity flash: allowing the card to be read when held at a distance of 3 to 6 inches from the reader.

  5. The card readers are usually mounted on the outside of the doors that they have been programmed to control. • Electric lock hardware This refers to the equipment that electrically locks and unlocks each door that is being controlled by the access system. These can range from electric locks, electric strikes, and electromagnetic locks, to electric exit devices and many more. Which type of hardware is used, will depend upon the construction of the door that it will be used on.

  6. • Access control field panels These are often referred to as ‘intelligent controllers’ and are fitted in every building that has an access control installation. The card readers, electric lock hardware and other control devices are connected to access control field panels. • Access control server computer This can be thought of as the brain of the access control system and serves as the central database and file manager for the access control system. Its role is to record all system activity and distribute information to and from the access control field panels. In many cases, one access control server can be used to control a great number of doors that are controlled by card readers.
