  3. Characterization Notes

  4. Character trait • Definition: A word that describes the personality or lifestyle of a character. • Example: KatnissEverdeen is: - brave - poor Laurie from “Charles” is: -middle-class -sassy

  5. Characterization • Definition: The way an author creates memorable characters. • Two kinds: direct and indirect

  6. Direct Characterization • Definition: The author tells the reader exactly what a character is like. • Examples: The pirate was a violent man. Laurie is a brat.

  7. Indirect Characterization • Definition: The author reveals a character’s personality through speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks • Example: “The pirate yelled, ‘YAAARRR!’ and swung his sword back and forth.”

  8. Indirect Characterization Five methods of indirect characterization (IC): • Speech • Thoughts • Effect on others • Actions • Looks

  9. Speech • What does the character say? • How does the character speak? • Example: • The pirate yelled, “YYYAAARRR.” • Laurie regarded his father coldly. “I didn’t learn nothing,” he said.

  10. Thoughts • Traits revealed through the character’s thoughts • Example: No one will get my treasure, the pirate thought angrily. This Charles kid is a bad influence on my sweet Laurie, Mother thought to herself.

  11. Effect on others How other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character Example: The pirate yelled, ‘YAAARRR!’, and the parrot eyed him warily. By the third week…Charles was an institution in our house. The baby was being a Charles when she cried; Laurie did a Charles when he..

  12. Actions What the character does Example: The pirate swung the sword back and forth. Charles hit the teacher Charles yelled Charles bounced the see-saw on a little girls head.

  13. Looks What the character look like Example: The pirate had a peg leg, a missing tooth, and a menacing grin. …replaced by a long-trousered swaggering character…

  14. At the bottom of your notes, answer the following question: What is the difference between direct and indirect characterization? Explain, and provide an example of each in your answer.
