  4. What • The Vietnam Warwas a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.

Why • After effects of the First Indochina War • 1954, Viet Minh victory over the French at Dien Bien Phu, • Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel. • Elections were planned for 1956 • Consequence of the cold war • War of Ideologies (fighting communism) – • Domino Theory--Americans feared the expansion of communism. The Truman doctrine stated that America would assist governments resisting communism. So therefore they decided to support the southern people of Vietnam. • Chinese and American involvement –Why?
