Feudalism in Spain Feudalism not a big deal in Spain (Islam forbade it) More feudalism in the north, less in south No huge need for defense against invaders Senor system: a farmer could abandon his lord to protect himself (no real serfs). 7. Picture the Reconquista as one of those wide brooms that gradually sweeps the Muslims down to the point at the bottom (Gibralter)

    8. Spain Conquers and Unites United under a banner of Christianity Last Muslims expelled in 1492. Re-emergence of the inquisition Not just against heretics, but against all non-christian Isabella: “One King, One Law, One Faith!” Expulsion of Jews

    9. Spanish Nationalism The idea of Spain was: “One King, One Law, One Faith!” Spain united around: Strong central leaders A united law (the catholic laws) Christianity – While the rest of Europe is questioning Catholicism, Spain embraces it completely.
