  4. What is a double block class? A double block class is a class that a student attends every day for 90 minutes. Athletics (except for track) and Emerald Belles are examples of double block classes.Example:Cross Country – a student would attend cross country every day during both 1st and 5thblocks.   10. STAAR/End of Course Exams (EOCs) Students must take and pass 5 End of Course Exams to graduate. Algebra I, Biology, English I 9th Grade English II 10thGrade U.S. History 11th Grade

Success Scholar Award To earn the Success Scholar distinction, a student must successfully complete the Foundation with Endorsements or the Distinguished Level of Achievement graduation plan, and in addition obtain: • Three years of the same world language • A 70+ average in every course taken • 100 hours of community service (logged in Naviance) The Success Scholar Award is not one of the state approved graduation plans; therefore, it is NOT required. It is an honor given by CISD in recognition of our students who choose to go beyond academic requirements and give back to the community. Students who complete the requirements for Success Scholar by senior year receive a medallion to wear at their graduation ceremony.

  12. NAVIANCE • NAVIANCE is a web-based program that students will use throughout high school for college and career planning, organizational help, communication system, resume builder, and logging community service hours. • NAVIANCE will provide students with opportunities to take personality and career interest inventories. • NAVIANCE has a Resume Builder that students can use to keep track of their activities – essential for college applications! • More information to come in Fall of 9th grade!

  13. Graduation Plans for Class of 2018 and beyond

  14. Foundation Plan • This 22 credit option is the least rigorous graduation plan available. • This plan isn’t available until after the completion of the sophomore year. • This plan limits opportunities for post secondary options for students.

  15. Foundation Plan with Endorsement • English I, II, and III and Advanced English • Math: Algebra I, Geometry, additional math credit, and 4th math credit • Science: Biology, IPC or other science, 3rd science, and 4th science • Social Studies: World Geography OR World History, US History, US Government and US Economics (3 required, 4 strongly encouraged)

Foundation Plan with Endorsement • Physical Education or Substitution (1) • Health (.5) • Language Other than English/World Language: any two levels in the same language OR Computer Science (2) • Fine arts (1) • One or more Endorsements with 4 credits in each • Electives (2.5) • Total credits: 26

Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) • English I, II, III, and Advanced English • Math: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, 4th math • Science: Biology, IPC or Other Science, 3rd science, and 4th science • Social Studies: World Geography OR World History, US History, US Government, Economics (3 credits required, 4 strongly encouraged)

Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) • All students in CISD start high school on the Distinguished Level of Achievement plan. • The DLA plan provides the most post-secondary education opportunities. • A student must earn Distinguished Level of Achievement to be eligible for Top 10% automatic admission in Texas public universities. • Distinguished plan is what colleges and universities want to see on a high school transcript (academic achievement record). • Students may change plans no sooner than the end of the sophomore year.

  20. Endorsement Options • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) • Public Services • Arts and Humanities • Business and Industries • Multi-Disciplinary (college preparatory coursework)

Personal Graduation Plan • High School counselors will help the 8th grade students complete their Personal Graduation Plan (PGP). • All PGP’s must be signed by a parent online in Skyward. • Most important thing to remember: nothing that is written on the PGP is permanent! All electives/endorsements can be changed from year to year during the high school registration process.

  22. PGP Signatures in Skyward Student: • Log in to Student Access with S-number and password. • Select an endorsement. • Electronically sign endorsement choice. Parent/Guardian: • Log in to Family Access with Parent log in. • Electronically sign student’s endorsement choice. Both student and parent signatures are required for process completion.

Honors, Pre-AP, and AP In order to take an Honors, Pre-AP, or AP (Advanced Placement) class, the prerequisite is: • A grade of 92 or higher in the previous on-level course in the same subject area. • A grade of 72 or higher in the previous Honors, Pre-AP, or AP class in the same subject area.

Tips For Selecting Courses • Think "destination" not just "journey.” • Refer to the Academic Planning Guide on the CHS Guidance website for the following: - course descriptions - course prerequisites - grade placement • Know your requirements for graduation. • Don’t forget to request 4 alternate courses in Skyward!

Course Request Timeline • January 31/Feb. 1:CHS Counselors meet with students at CMS and DMS to introduce them to Carroll High School and to the Graduation Plan. • February 6:8th grade Parent Information Meeting at CHS @ 6:00 pm in the Cafeteria. • February 4/6: CHS Counselors meet with DMS and CMS students to help them start their Personal Graduation Plan and select courses for the 2017-18 school year. • February 12/13: CHS Counselors meet with CMS and DMS students to answer questions, collect completed grad plans, and review process for on-line course selection and Arena Scheduling from home. • February 14:8th grade parent Q & A session at 9:00 a.m. in CHS Lecture Hall. • February 28:Deadline for on-line Course Selection and endorsement signature in Skyward.

Arena Scheduling Timeline • Feb 18 – 28: Open window to request 2019-20 courses, sign grad plan, and sign endorsement selection in Skyward • Feb. 28: Deadline to request courses • Feb. 28: Deadline to sign grad plan and selection of endorsement in Skyward • April 25 - 29: 8th graders schedule their freshman classes in Skyward via Arena Scheduling • June 3 – 7: Adjustment window for course selection • Aug. 5 – 9: Adjustment window for course selection
