  5. Biography of Van Halen Eddie Van Halen Birth Name: Edward Lodewijk Van Halen. Birth date: January 26, 1955 Birth Place: Nijmegen, Holland. In 1968, the Van Halen family relocated to California where Eddie had a job as a paperboy. He started playing the drums. Alex Van Halen Birth name: Alex Arthur Van Halen. Birth date: May 8, 1953 Birth Place: Nijmegen, Holland. Alex, the older of the Van Halen Brothers, started his music education with piano lessons, as did his brother Eddie. After the Van Halen family moved to L.A. he started practicing guitar, but he tried his brother's drum kit, and he decided to switch to drums.
