  2. What is it? • Pop art emerged in the mid-1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the United States. • Popular culture such as advertising, news, etc. • Material is sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated, and/or combined with unrelated material.

  3. Pop art is aimed to employ images of popular emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture, most often through the use of irony. • Much of pop art is considered incongruent.

  4. Known artists and painters

  5. ANDY WARHOL • Warhol is the central figure of the American Pop Art movement. • He started his career as a commercial artist, advertising for local and national companies through his humorous spin on his illustrations. • Andy Warhol was a workaholic.

  7. Claes Oldenburg • Famous for his live artworks displayed all around the world, international landmarks, Claes turned the world around taking Pop Art to a whole new level…3D!!!

  8. Roy Lichtenstein • Comic adaptations. • Has lived a very colorful life as a family man, an educator, a war soldier and an artist. • His most famous works of art were the large scale comic-type ones complete with the dots similar to the ones in comic books.

  9. Peter Blake • Is known as one of the best British Pop Artists. • Much of Peter Blake’s art is based on advertisements, wrestlers, and music hall entertainment and includes many collaged elements.
