  3. How Can Citizens Influence Political Process?? • Protesting Peacefully: • Dirty War • Mothers of the Disappeared protested Dictatorship • Ended the Dirty War

Culture and the Common Traits • Culture region – a way of dividing the world into areas where a particular form of government, religion, economic system, language, or tradition is predominate. • South America is a Cultural Region because: • Shared colonial past • Movement to independence • Religion • Language

  5. Multicultural Society = Positive or Negative??? Multicultural Society - one in which two or more cultures exist within close proximity. • Positive Qualities: • Cultures borrowed from each other • Larger varieties of food, tradition, music, religions, better opportunities. • Examples: • African Slaves brought Capoeira (elements of martial arts, sports, and music), samba, Candomble (Afro-Brazilian Religion), food, etc .

  6. Multicultural Society = Positive or Negative??? Multicultural Society - one in which two or more cultures exist within close proximity. • Negative Qualities: • Cultures often clash: • Socially • Economically • Politically • Examples: • Racism • Many African practices were outlawed in Brazil in the 20th century.
