  1. Blog 4: Globalrefininggroup.com WHY A CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILS We are all aware of what a catalytic converter is. In an effort to achieve environmental preservation, this device was mandated for use in the USA, in all automobiles. It does help to preserve the environment; however, this happens only when the converter is working properly. Just like any other machine, this device also faces operational troubles. Reasons ranging from manual tampering to accidents to actual fault in the converter. Once it has failed, there is little room for repair. All you can do then is take it to catalytic converter scrap dealers. Here are the major reasons of failure of a catalytic converter. The first reason is that it can become clogged. A catalytic converter is a device that deals with incoming gases, and carries a catalyst that reacts with these gases. Sometimes, due to many reasons, unwanted products may enter this device and clog it. This may happen due to overuse of a certain type of fuel or leaded gasoline. When a clogged condition is suspected, a mechanic would probably remove the oxygen sensor in your vehicle (present ahead of the converter) and check if the vehicle performance has improved. The second reason can be faulty plugs of your vehicle. This causes unburned or partially burned fuel to flow into the converter, resulting in overheating and failure. Each year, many unmaintained cars are brought to garages, reporting failure of these devices. The mechanic just extracts the scrap catalytic converter and sells it to a recycling company. To keep your catalytic converter working fine, it is important to make sure that all the equipment in your vehicle is working okay.
