  1. Article4: Globalrefininggroup.com Information About Catalytic Converters A catalytic converter is an integral part of the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. Generally, they are used in construction equipment, generators and automobiles. To meet the legal requirements set by the local Government, all manufacturers of vehicles should add catalytic converters to the vehicles produced by them. The main objective of these converters is to reduce the amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide commonly known as smog and greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by combustion of fossil fuels. That is why use of catalytic converters is legally mandatory for public health and environmental reasons. These catalytic converters are made of different types of metals -platinum group metals like rhodium and palladium. Picking up the most appropriate catalytic converter for your car is one of the most important step you will be taking for maintenance of your vehicle.Be it for maximizing the performance,or minimizing the fuel consumption or for doing your bit for the environment, getting the right catalytic converter will save your money and time. While selecting the right catalytic converters, the most important question that might cross your mind is can my device fail? Yes of course it can .The catalytic converter may stop working due to many reasons. To state a few: Road damage: The exterior of the devicemay be damaged if it is hit by solid objects like big rocks or speed breakers on the road Plugged or tainted Using the wrong fuel in your car may lead to blocked or contaminated catalytic converters. Use of leaded fuel will plug up the monolith and it may stop working. Similarly the use of fuel additives which are unsuitable for use with catalytic converters will also damage the monolith causing it to stop working. Melted / Broken substrate The monolith of the catalytic converter generally breaks when it is hit by an object or when it undergoes a sudden change in temperature. The melting of monolith may be caused if unburned fuel is injected into the catalytic converter due to bumping or low starting the car. Overheating A catalytic converter may get overheated due to several reasons. The most common reason is the unburned fuel entering the converter. Faulty spark plugs and leads will also cause the engine to backfire and damage the catalytic converter. How would you find whether it is time to replace your catalytic converter? This is the next important question that comes in the mind of vehicle owners. Basically four things can help you in determining if there is a need to replace your catalytic converter. First thing is to check the body of your catalytic converter and find out if it is rusty or busted.Next is to see if you find small substrate chunks on areas other than exhaust system. Third is to see whether the pelletized converter is rattling or not. In case you do not hear any rattling then the pellets may have fallen down or melted. Finally, if you hear a rattling sound in monolith it indicates that the substrate may have been separated.
