Overview of theproblems and challenges The Hungarian educational system provides the fewest opportunities for children of parents with lower education and the children of poor families among thesurveyed OECD countries (OECD PISA, 2000, 2003, 2006) Selectivity of theschoolsystem: The differencesinschoolachievementsamongschoolsare more significantthanthedifferencesbetweentheachievements of studentswithintheschools. Contextualeffect’: thesocio-economical status of theschool (theaverage status of thestudents) contributes more totheschoolachievements of thestudents, thantheirfamilybackground. Inthe OECD countriesthe 36% of differencesinreadingachievementscan be explainedbythedifferencesamongschools, whilethisproportion is 71% in Hungary.
