  4. Menstrual Cycle • Cyclic changes of endometrium • Regulated by estrogen and progesterone levels

  5. Stages of Menstrual Cycle • Menses – functional layer of endometrium is sloughed • Proliferative stage – regeneration of functional layer • Secretory stage – endometrium increases in size and gets ready for implantation

  7. Fertilization

  8. Days 1-4 • 1 Sperm fertilizes egg • DNA from both parents is now present and it is called a zygote (first cell of new person!)

  9. Days 5-7 • Zygote divides rapidly (cleavage)and becomes a blastocyst • ~ 100 cells • Implantation occurs, it is now called an embryo Days 8-9 Fluid

  10. Ovulation – Fertilization - Implantation

  11. After Implantation • Chorionic villi (projections of blastocyst) develop • Cooperate with uterine cells to form placenta • Embryo surrounded by amnion (fluid filled sac) • Umbilical cord forms attaching embryo to placenta

  12. Placenta • Barrier between mother/embryo • Deliver oxygen, nutrients • Produces hormones • Estrogen • Progesterone
