  2. Parts of a Window

  3. Double Hung • A window with two vertically moving sashes, each closing a different part of the window

  4. Casement • Window sash which swings open on side hinges • In swinging are French in origin • Out swinging are English

  5. Bay window • Windows that project out from the wall. • An angle bay refers to the angle of departure from the plane of the wall

  6. Bow window • Rounded bay window that projects from a wall in the shape of an arc. • Usually consists of five sash.

  7. Clerestory • A window in the upper part of a lofty room that admits light to the center of the room

  8. Combination • Window assembly containing a combination of more than one window type

  9. Storm and Sash • Window assembly containing a half screen and two glass storm panels • In the summer the bottom storm panel is stored in the top frame exposing the screen panels

  10. Dormer window • Window in a wall that projects from a sloping roof in an alcove

  11. French Doors • Sometimes called French windows (but that’s wrong!) • Come in pairs and often open onto a porch or patio.

  12. Sliding Glass Doors • Today’s functional version of French Doors

  13. Awning Window • Top hinged sash • Pivot near the top and typically swing outward

  14. Jalousie • A shutter type window with slats which are fixed or adjustable

  15. Picture Window • A large fixed piece of glass • Designed to frame and outside view

  16. Café Curtain • A single pair of short panels ½ the length of the window.

  17. Cellular shade • Two or more sheets of accordion pleated reinforced fabric which is bonded together

  18. Cornice • Three sided box placed over a window • Can be wood, painted wood or covered with fabric

  19. Drape • Old fashioned term for a heavy weight fabric panel.

  20. Festoon • Sewn to gather vertically • Similar to a valance

  21. Balloon Shade

  22. Jabot • A small panel, usually folded into deep pleats at the top and cut at an angle.

  23. Pleated shade • More a blind than a shade • Accordion pleated fabric which is raised and lowered with cords like a blind

  24. Roller shade • Fabric or vinyl spring wound on a tube

  25. Roll up blind • Fabric or wood that rolls when a cord is pulled

  26. Roman shade • Fabric shade with slat inserted horizontally down the entire length • Raised and lowered via pull cord and gathers in soft folds

  27. Scarf • Long piece of fabric usually designed to drape across the top of a window

  28. Shutter • Wooden hinged panels. • Adjusted with louvers to control light

  29. Valance • Any fabric treatment that tops a window

  30. Swag • One piece valance cut longer on either end so it frames the window
