  1. 1.7 Distributive Property I can use the distributive property to simplify expressions.

  2. The Distributive Property You can use the distributive property to simplify the product of a number and a sum or difference. a(b+c) = ab + ac (b+c)a = ba + ca a(b – c) = ab – ac (b – c)a = ba – ca

  3. Area Models 8 40 8x 5 x 8x+40 8(x+5) 8 x+5

  4. Practice • 3(x+8) • (5b – 4)(-7) • What about • Can you use the distributive property? • (7x + 2) • -(3 + 2x) • -(7y – 9)

  5. Algebraic Expressions • Term: number, variable, or product of a number and one or more variables • a + 2ab + 3a2 - 14 + 9b • Constant: a term that has no variables • 8 + x + 2y • Coefficient: a numerical factor of a term • 2xy + 5 -3y • Like Terms: have the same variable factors • 3x +2 – 5 – 2xy + 6x – xy

  6. Simplifying Before Distributing Combine like terms within parentheses 2(3x – 5 +4x) 2(7x – 5) Distribute 14x – 10

  7. Assignment ODDS ONLY Pg. 50 #9-15, 25-39, 53-57, 69, 71
